Das Hefeweizen

The naturally cloudy Hefeweizen from Deutsche Krone impresses with its amber color and its characterful, sparkling-fruity taste. It is appreciated by beer connoisseurs, especially for its typical banana aroma, which is characteristic of wheat beer and brewed according to the German Beer Purity Law of 1516.

It is the banana aroma that distinguishes a perfect wheat beer. It is difficult to produce, but it is a matter of course for Deutsche Krone. The brewery of Deutsche Krone has been internationally recognized and awarded for the unique banana aroma of its Hefeweizen.

Our wheat beer is traditionally moderately hopped and therefore less bitter in taste. As a top-fermented beer brewed with top-fermenting yeast from wheat malt and using barley malt, Deutsche Krone Hefeweizen is relatively carbonated and has a typically fruity aroma.

Brewing method: Top-fermented | Beer type: Vollbier (full-bodied beer) | Original wort content: 11.3 °P | Alcohol: 5.0% vol.

German Brewing Tradition

In our beer, you can find the passion for the brewing craft, which has a tradition of over 500 years. Deutsche Krone Hefeweizen is brewed strictly according to the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. It stipulates the exclusive use of malt, hops, and water – ingredients carefully selected for our Deutsche Krone beer to guarantee the best quality.

Beer was already a popular drink in Europe during the Middle Ages. However, it was in the German monastery breweries in the early Middle Ages that a professional brewing industry emerged. The Christian monks played a crucial role in shaping German brewing art with their variety of beer types and numerous flavors.

Originally, the self-brewed monastery beer was served as a nutritious beverage, especially during fasting periods when the monks were not allowed to eat but could drink. The Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516 put an end to experimenting with beer recipes by specifying the allowable ingredients for beer for the first time.

To this day, German brewers are only allowed to use four ingredients: hops, malt, water, and yeast. When selecting these ingredients for our Hefeweizen, we pay attention to high-quality and gentle processing.

The German Beer Purity Law

The German Beer Purity Law is the oldest food law regulation in the world that is still valid to this day. It was issued by the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm IV in 1516, ensuring that beer was brewed exclusively from hops, malt, and water. Yeast was not mentioned because its significance was hardly known. However, yeast is essential for fermentation and is now considered the fourth necessary ingredient for beer. Thanks to this regulation, German beer attained a top position worldwide. The Beer Purity Law requires more brewing skill because the style and taste can be created solely through the combination of the four ingredients and the brewing process. That's why Deutsche Krone Hefeweizen is a very special beer – the crown of taste, for which the brewery in Germany has received international awards numerous times.

Our Brewery

The art of brewing beer has a centuries-old tradition in Germany. In 1744, permission was granted to a farmhouse located at the foot of the Eierberg in the Südvorstadt district of Leipzig to serve beer and wine. In May 1838, the Meier brothers purchased the property and began constructing a lager beer brewery at the old Bergschlösschen, establishing the "Aktienbrauerei zum Bergschlößchen" in 1868. Today, it is the combination of traditional brewing art with state-of-the-art technology that makes the Bergschlösschen Brewery one of the most successful breweries in Germany. This success is reflected in numerous awards.
